YDR's Center for Dance Studies temporary location, Salam Arabic Lutheran Church at 345 Ovington Avenue, between 3rd & 4th Ave in Brooklyn.  For information about other classes held off-site, click here.

YDR’s Center for Dance Studies offers classical modern dance, ballet, pointe, tap, creative movement, and international dance forms. Classes are comprehensive for the novice through professional student, ages 3 to 18. Adult classes are also available.

Descriptions of Classes

Creative Movement - Ages 3 - 6
In this course students explore their own movement potential and learn about their bodies in a fun-filled manner. Music and rhythm games are also stressed as students learn the basics of dance and develop a strong foundation in movement skills. Creative Movement is a multi-year course.

Pre-Ballet - Ages 5 & 6
The Pre-Ballet class has been designed to introduce the strenuous technique of ballet to the young student in a creative and fun-filled fashion.  This class is ideal for students who have already experienced one year of Creative Movement.

Ballet - Ages 7 & up
A classical, more formal dance form; develops strength, fluidity of movement and
flexibility.  Ballet classes are based upon the Cechetti method.  The history of Ballet is taught as appropriate.

Pointe - girls, by placement only.  An extension of Ballet training, Pointe work is only offered for the serious student  who is already taking a minimum of two technique classes per week and has already developed a strong Ballet technique.

Modern Dance - Ages 7 & up
An American contemporary dance form, Modern Dance develops a full range of body movement and freedom of expression. Classes are based upon the principles of movement first explored by American Modern Dance pioneers, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. Additional classes in Horton and/or Graham technique are also taught to expand the knowledge and dance experiences of advanced students.  Students must keep a notebook of modern dance terminology, vocabulary and modern dance history.

Tap - Ages 7 & up
Students learn basic foot work, traditional steps & vocabulary, rhythmic patterns, syncopation, and tap history. In the more advanced classes, additional emphasis is placed upon movement style and creative combinations of movement sequences.

Jazz Dance/Hip Hop - Ages 7 & up
Broadway and contemporary dance styles are explored in this high-energy class.  Jazz Dance combinations are movement phrases are taught to build strength, fluidity of movement, musicality and dynamic phrasing.

Theater Dance – Ages 9 & up
A class exploring the different dance styles in musical and Broadway productions. Students in the Theater Dance class will receive a wide overview of theatrical dance and music.

Dynaerobics - Teenagers & Adults
Dynaerobics combines strengthening and stretching with dynabands, dance movements, and an aerobic workout for a complete and overall exercise regime. Dynaerobics is taught by a certified fitness instructor/personal trainer. Students should wear supportive sneakers.

Yoga - Teenagers & Adults
If the pressure of today's world leaves you feeling frazzled and out of sorts, practicing the science of Yoga may help you feel whole again.  Yoga's techniques address physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual disciplines.

 
Pilates - Adults
Pilates is a series of exercises on the mat to strengthen your center, lengthen your spine, build muscle tone & gain flexibility. A strong center will alleviate back pain, prevent injury and improve performance in all aspects of life.
