POLICIES & PROCEDURES

 

à         The Center for Dance Studies reserves the right to withdraw any course listed in our Schedule of Classes for which enrollment is not sufficient to warrant the organization of such a class.

 

à         The Center for Dance Studies reserves the right to dismiss any student due to lack of interest, frequent absence or tardiness, behavioral problems, delinquency of fees, and/or failure to abide by policy.

 

à         The Center for Dance Studies reserves the right to change the level of any student during the term to ensure the student’s individual growth and development.

 

à         If a teacher is absent, The Center for Dance Studies will provide a qualified substitute or educational class situation; class will not be canceled.

 

à         Parents and family members are not permitted to observe classes; rather, The Center for Dance Studies holds a Parents’ Observation Week once each term.

 

à         The Directors of The Center for Dance Studies periodically attend classes in order to routinely observe and monitor the level of instruction at The Center for Dance Studies.

 

à         The Center for Dance Studies sets the payment and fee schedule for all on-site classes.  For financial assistance please refer to “Scholarship and Financial Aid Programs.”

 

à         The Center for Dance Studies and its Directors will make every effort to meet the demands and needs of individual students.  However, it is the ultimate responsibility of the student and/or parent to notify the directors when problems arise whether they be financial, instructional, or personal.

 

à         The Center for Dance Studies does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, nationality, sex, ethnic origin, religious beliefs, nor physical aptitude/ability in its educational policies, admission of students, or hiring practices.

 

RULES & REGULATIONS

The following is stated to ensure the safety, enjoyment, and decorum of classes.

 

ð      Classes begin promptly; please make certain you arrive at least 10 minutes prior to class to dress/fix hair/talk.

ð      Punctuality is important; if you are more than 10 minutes late for class (after the beginning warm-ups) it is up to the discretion of the teacher whether or not you will participate in class -- this is for your physical and mental benefit.  If you are more than 10 minutes late for class, you may be asked to observe class, but still be an active participant in some manner.   When observing class, you must take written notes.

ð      All students are required to keep a notebook of class material; this notebook must be brought to each class.  Teachers will give written materials and assignments to students. Students should also make regular notes in their notebooks in respect to their class material & corrections received during class in order to enhance the learning process.

ð      All students are expected to wear proper attire for all dance technique classes (leotards, tights, shoes, as appropriate).  No T-shirts, bicycle pants, shorts, sweat pants (girls).

ð      Street clothes, shoes & bags should be stored in the first floor reception area.  Jackets and coats must be hung up in the hallway.  No articles of clothing should be brought into the studio.

ð      Hair must be secured up and off the face.

ð      For your safety, please DO NOT:

            wear street shoes on the studio floor;

                bring food or drink into the studios;

                lean on or touch the mirrors;

                hang on the ballet barres;

                wear jewelry of ANY KIND in class (post earrings, only)

ð      Let’s be clean. . .Please dispose of any refuse properly in the trash bins. The Center for Dance Studies recycles; please pay attention into which trash bin you are disposing trash.  Food is permitted in the Reception Room on the 1st floor, ONLY.

GENERAL INFORMATION

 

ADMISSIONS & REGISTRATION

            Although divided into two fifteen-week terms, courses at the Center for Dance Studies are considered year-long.  Student level will be maintained from September through June unless otherwise recommended.

            Returning Students may register by mail by returning your completed registration form and payment.

            New Students/Families seeking admission to the Center for Dance Studies should call 347-702-7155 to make an appointment to meet with the Director and/or Staff for an interview.  During this interview process, options for study will be explored.  Students with prior dance training will be auditioned to assure proper placement in class(es).  Placement interviews occur throughout the first week of classes.  Since space is limited, it is strongly suggested you interview and register early.

 

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

            Students are enrolled for an entire fifteen-week term and families are liable for the full amount of tuition for each term. Payment in full is due at the time of registration and prior to the first day of classes.  Families with tuition above $300 per term are eligible for a payment arrangement with the approval of the Director.  If necessary, special billing/payment arrangements may be made with the Director’s approval.

            There is a $20.00 non-refundable annual registration fee per family, per year.  Our year runs from July 1 – June 30.

            The fee for a returned check is $20.00

            The fee for late tuition payment is $15.00 per month

Families with tuition above $300 per term, may receive a 10% discount if payment in full is received on or prior to September 15, 2007 (for the fall term) and January 1, 2008 (for the winter term).

            Payments made by check or money order should be made payable to YOUNG DANCERS IN REPERTORY.  Tuition and fees are listed in our Schedule of Classes.

Accounts in arrears will result in the interruption of classes. The student may not be permitted back into classes until past-due accounts are brought up-to-date.   Students may not participate in performances until accounts in arrears are brought up-to-date.


WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS

            The Center for Dance Studies reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment.  Should a class be canceled, and/or the student is not able to be placed in an appropriate class and there is a balance left in the account, a refund will be processed.

            A withdrawal is considered the discontinuation of any or all studies at the Center for Dance Studies.  All requests for withdrawal must be submitted, in writing, to the Director of the Center for Dance Studies before any student will be considered withdrawn.  Verbal requests or notification of intention to withdraw made directly to a student’s teacher or YDR Director does not fulfill this requirement.  The date of which the written withdrawal is received by the Center for Dance Studies, not the last date of attendance, is considered as the official date of withdrawal.

            Tuition refunds will be considered when written notice of withdrawal is received.  No refunds are given after the fourth class meeting.  The registration fee is non-refundable.  A Withdrawal Fee of $20 will be charged upon withdrawal of classes from the Center for Dance Studies.  It takes 30 days to process a refund.

 

MISSED CLASSES

            Students must make every effort to be punctual for each class.  For all dance classes, punctuality means arriving at least 10 minutes early to change clothing, fix hair, and mentally & physically prepare for class.

            Students should notify the Center for Dance Studies of any absence out of courtesy to the instructor; however, this does not exempt the student from payment as contracted.  All students and families are contracted for the full amount of tuition as outlined in the Schedule of Classes.  Pro-rating of tuition will only occur for those students beginning classes after the 3rd class meeting.

            In the event of inclement weather or an emergency, the Center for Dance Studies will notify students of class cancellation.  Students are encouraged to call the Center for Dance Studies to ascertain whether classes are being held in the event of inclement weather.  If classes are canceled due to inclement weather, a message will be left on the Center for Dance Studies’ voice-mail.

            In the event of a forced closing due to weather, or any unforeseen emergency, the first canceled day of classes for each given day of the week will not be made up.  Subsequent make-up classes for the Center for Dance Studies canceled classes will be arranged by the Center.


SAFETY & SECURITY -- RECEPTION AREA

            If your child’s class ends at 5:00, he/she will not be outside the Center for Dance Studies waiting for you.  Dance students need at least 10 minutes to change clothing, unwind from class, and get a drink.  Keeping this in mind, parents should make every effort to pick students up from classes promptly.  A $5.00 fee per half hour will be imposed upon those who are repeatedly late and leave their child(ren) unattended .

 

SCHOLARSHIP & FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM

            All tuition at the Center for Dance Studies is subsidized by grass-roots fund-raising activities. Families are encouraged to help raise funds in order to assist us keep tuition at minimum cost to all.

            Our Scholarship and Financial Aid Program enables us to offer limited financial assistance to those in need. An application process is required of those who apply for financial assistance. Financial aid, which is partial tuition assistance, is offered to returning families first; new families may apply for assistance if funding is available. The amount of tuition not covered by the financial aid will be due in full. Financial aid awards are for current tuition, only; past due accounts are not payable through this assistance.

WORKSHOPS AND MASTER CLASSES

          Throughout the year YDR presents Master Classes and Workshops by guest artists.  They are announced in our newsletter & through fliers.  Previous sessions included: Benjamin Millipede of The New York City Ballet; Rika Burnham of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Geraldo Espinosa in Capoeira; Viktorya Poprocka in Slovakian Dance; Ai Jun Chang in Chinese Dance; Donell Stines, Cherly Glatt & Kathy Sanson in Salsa and Latin Dance; Josie Metal-Corbin in Balkan Dance; and Kwame Ross of Urban Bush Women, African Dance.

            Other Workshops, including our Arts Program in dance, music & visual art at the Beacon I.S. 220 Community Program, Dancing Though Brooklyn Parks, and Dancing Away on Brooklyn Day are announced in our newsletters.


STUDENT EVALUATION

            Final written year-end reports from the instructors serve to evaluate each student’s (children and teenagers) individual progress and also recommend subsequent class level.  These written reports are to serve as a measurement of individual progress rather than an assessment of talent. Evaluations are mailed to parents; a copy is kept on file at the Center for Dance Studies.

 

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

            The Center for Dance Studies does not produce a year-end recital.  Rather, students are invited to participate in an informal Dance Celebration in the spring, which may also include members of YDR’s Touring Ensemble and Faculty Members. 

            The Center for Dance Studies produces an annual Dance-A-Thon in which all students are encouraged to participate.  The Dance-A-Thon is a student-driven fund-raising event which helps to support the Center for Dance Studies’ Financial Aid program.

            YDR’s Touring Ensemble, presents an average of 40 performances annually throughout NYC.  This ensemble holds open auditions annually.  Boys & girls between the ages of 9-14 are encouraged to audition for The Touring Ensemble.  Information regarding auditions, as well as company performances, is published in our newsletter, as well as through fliers posted in our reception area.

 

FACULTY PERFORMANCES

            The professional artist/educators of the Center for Dance Studies perform regularly in NYC, throughout the country, and abroad.  Information pertaining to these, as well as other performances, is posted in the Center’s Reception Room throughout the year and announced in our newsletter.  Students are encouraged to attend these performances; discount tickets are made available to Center for Dance Studies students & their families, when possible.

 

NEWSLETTER

            The Center for Dance Studies’ newsletter is our most effective way of communicating to our families.  It contains information about our upcoming activities, classes, special events, and deadlines, as well as information about individual students and faculty members. We love to hear from you!  Please submit information pertaining to Center for Dance Studies’ students to us for inclusion in the newsletter.

 

DIRECTORS

Carol Mezzacappa, Founding Director, YDR; MFA Performing Arts Management, BS Dance, Brooklyn College, CUNY; Intermediate Certificate in Labanotation, Dance Notation Bureau; Performer: NYC modern dance companies, off-Broadway, operatic and theatrical productions.  She has taught, directed, and choreographed nationally and internationally.  NYC Teaching credentials include: Teachers College Columbia University, NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, the Fieldston School for Ethical Culture, Poly Prep Country Day School, and for the Brooklyn College Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts (Dance Coordinator 1983-92).  Director: Dance Consort: Mezzacappa-Gabrian.   Faculty: José Limón Dance Institute; Adjunct Associate Professor, School of Health, Physical Education & Recreation, University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Carol was the year 2000 President’s Artist Scholar-in-Residence/ University of Nebraska & the year 2000 Distinguished Lecturer for the University of Nebraska/Omaha’s School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.  She was the 1998 recipient of the Italian American Performing Arts Award from Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes.

Carol served as a guest lecturer, trainer, and panelist for the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, PASE – the Partnership for After School Education, TASC – The After School Corporation, Dance Giant Steps, the Charles Weidman Dance Foundation. Carol passed away on October 12, 2004.

Craig Gabrian,  Executive Director, Founding Director of YDR; BS Dance Stephen’s College; BFA Education, University of Missouri at Columbia; performances include NYC modern dance companies, the Harriette Ann Gray Dance Company, regional and touring musical  theater productions, and as Co-director: Dance Consort: Mezzacappa-Gabrian. Craig has choreographed for professional, regional, & college theater and dance projects and taught at college, university, and children’s dance programs across the country, including Webster University, The Princeton Ballet, and Orange County Community College.

 

FACULTY & STAFF (as of January 2007)

Jenny Chang, Instructor, holds a BFA in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College. Jenny has danced with the Times Square Millennium Extravaganza, Greater Lansing Ballet Co & Young Michigan Dancers. YDR staff since 2007.

June December, YDR Office Manager since October 2000, has sixteen years of experience in the corporate world as an Insurance Broker with a large New York firm. In conjunction with her corporate experience, June assisted in the running of the Brooklyn College Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts office which provided dance, music and theater classes for children of ages 3 to 18 years old. June holds a Bachelors Degree in Performing Arts specializing in Dance from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.

Mary Johnna DiClementi, Instructor, MS Reading, Brooklyn College; BFA Dance, Marymount Manhattan College; founding member YDR’s Touring Ensemble.  Mary has performed with local New York City dance companies.  She is a Certified Teacher New York City Department of Education, P.S. 244.  YDR staff since 2002.

Alaine Handa, Instructor, attended the University of California, Los Angeles for Dance. Alaine has choreographed for Third Culture Kids, Breathe Easy, Matrix, Que Sera Sera, V.I.C.T.I.M., Utopia, Spiritual Decay, and The Exodus. Alaine is a Co-Artistic Director of The Movement Collective.

Madeline Hoak, Instructor, holds a B.A. Theater and Dance, Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA.  Ms. Hoak has worked as Director and Playwright of the KidSpot Theatre Company, has been an actor and educator for Children’s Stage Adventures, Inc. and was an Instructor and choreographer at the Stage Door Workshop.  Madeline has performed with the Flea Theater, the Ice House and the Foothills TheaterYDR staff since 10/2006.

Felicia Kennerly, Instructor, holds a BFA Dance, City College of CUNY. Felicia has participated in SUMMER DANCE Intensive programs at Harvard University in Massachusetts. She has performed with a number of companies including the Freeman Repertory Ensemble, Rod Rodgers Dance Company and Nova Dance Company. Ms. Kennerly is in the progress of choreographing "A Kennerly Christmas Carol" and has also choreographed for the Staten Island Conservatory of Music and the Rosetta Lenoire Eubie Blake Amas Musical Theatre. YDR staff since 2006.

Doreen Miranda, Program Associate & Instructor, holds a BA in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and also attended LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts for dance.  She has worked as a Court Liaison/Case Manager for the NYC TASC in Queens, an Anger Management Teacher at the Educational Assistance Corporation, as well as other positions. Doreen has taught dance for Education in Dance and was the Performing Arts Director at the Beacon School of P.S. 314.  YDR staff since 2003.

Veronica Reid, Instructor and Education Associate, received a BFA in Dance, and a Certification as a Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer, both from Marymount Manhattan College. Veronica’s teaching credentials include the Kings Bay YM-YWHA, and as a Certified NYC Public School dance teacher at P.S. 149 and P.S. 233.  Veronica’s performing experiences include the O’Malley Dancers; Coyote Dancers; Electric Currents Dance Company; with Movement Research Artist Ruby Gamez; Dance Consort: Mezzacappa-Gabrian; and with regional opera companies.

Trayer Run-Kowzun, Instructor received her BFA in dance from the National Institute of the Arts in Taipei, Taiwan.  She performed in the International Festival of Dance Academies in Hong Kong and Taipei.  She moved to New York City in 1993.  She continues to train in the Lester Horton technique with Milton Myers and Tee Ross.  Tray-a is a recipient of the “Modern Dance Workshop” Scholarship at the Jacob’s Pillow. Tray-a has been performing with the Freeman Repertory Dance/Company since 1995 and the Dance Consort: Mezzacappa-Gabrian since 2000.  She has performed with the Lotus Music & Dance and various ethnic artists.  Since 1999 Trayer has been a teacher at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club-The Performing Arts Department and YDR’s Center for Dance Studies.

Maralin Springer, graduated from John Dewey H.S. in June 2000.  She attended Sage Junior College in Albany, and Hunter College in New York.  Currently, she is studying small business management at home, and hopes to publish her book of poetry sometime this year.

Kelly Williams, Instructor, holds a BFA Degree in Dance from the Florida State University and an AA Degree in Modern Dance from the Florida School of the Performing Arts. She has performed with the Demetrius Klein Dance Company in South Florida, and has had the opportunity to study and dance with Mikhail Baryshnikov and the White Oak Dance Project, Garth Fagan Dance Company, Buglisi Forman Company, principal members of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Anne Carlson, Chris Berdenside, Pacific Repertory Ballet and Dance, Florida Dance Festival, and Florida Dance Masters. Kelly has also danced for the Venus International Model Search (televised January 2000 on E TV), was a RHUMBA Dancer for Anheuser-Bush, and has performed with

Dance Consort: Mezzacappa-Gabrian and Dawn Ministries. YDR staff since 2000.

 

Julie Turner, Instructor, holds a BFA in Dance from the University of Southern Mississippi. She has danced in the DNA Student Performance workshop, Dance Space Works, Cool New York Dance Festival and the D.U.M.B.O. Dance Festival in NYC.

OFF-SITE PROGRAMMING

YDR offers several different afterschool and weekend off-site programs for children and youth, including: The Beacon I.S. 220 (Pershing) Community Program; Learning School District 7’s 21st Century Learning Centers; and Heartshare.  Seasonal programming is offered as part of the Lutheran Elementary School After School Program.  Enrollment in these programs is arranged directly by the sponsoring organization.  If you are interested in any of these programs, please call YDR (347-702-7155) for related information.

SCHEDULE OF CLASSES

 

Placement in all classes at YOUNG DANCERS IN REPERTORY’s Center for Dance Studies is based upon the individual student’s age, level, and ability. The Center for Dance Studies maintains a broad-based curriculum from the beginner through advanced student.  Instruction in each class is structured to develop consistent technical and artistic training and development. Classes are Co-ed unless otherwise stated.

 

Class schedule is subject to changes.

Tuition listed is for one fifteen-week term.

There is a non-refundable $20.00 registration fee

per family/per school year.

Additional events are included in a year-long Calendar/Schedule of Events.

 

 

SINGLE CLASSES

The cost of a single class in any dance discipline/program is $15.

 

 

CLASSES FOR THE YOUNG CHILD, AGES 3-6

 

CREATIVE MOVEMENT, ages 3-6         $120 per term

As part of the Creative Movement experience, students explore their own movement potential and learn about their bodies in a fun-filled manner. Music and rhythm games are also included as students learn the basics of dance and develop a good foundation in movement skills. Creative Movement is a multi-year course, levels I & II are scheduled for school year 2003-2004.

PRE-BALLET, ages 5-6             $120 per term

The Pre-Ballet class has been designed to introduce the strenuous technique of ballet to the young student in a creative and fun-filled fashion.  This class is ideal for students who have already experienced one year of Creative Movement.

            Pre-Ballet, Thursday 4:00–4:45 or Saturday 11:00-11:45

 

DANCE FUNDAMENTALS, ages 10 & up                       $150 per term

This class has been designed for the beginning level student.  Students will learn techniques essential for all dance forms as well as contemporary styles like Jazz and Hip-Hop.

TAP, ages 7 & up         $150 per term

In the Tap Dance classes students explore basic footwork, traditional steps, vocabulary, rhythmic patterns, syncopation, & tap history. In advanced classes, additional emphasis is placed upon movement style and creative combinations of sequences. Students must maintain a tap notebook which must be brought to each class.

A class exploring the different dance styles in musical and Broadway productions, students in the Theater Dance class will receive a wide overview of theatrical dance and music.

Broadway and contemporary dance styles are explored in this high-energy class.  Jazz dance combinations and movement phrases are taught to build strength, fluidity of movement, musicality and dynamic phrasing.

An American contemporary form of dance, Modern Dance develops a full range of body movement and freedom of expression. Classes are based upon the principles of movement first explored by American modern dance pioneers, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. Additional classes in Horton and/or Graham technique are also taught to expand the knowledge and dance experiences of advanced students.  Students must keep a notebook of modern dance terminology, vocabulary and modern dance history. Notebooks must be brought to each class.

DYNAEROBICS/EXERCISE, body conditioning, aerobics

$110 per term

Dynaerobics combines strengthening and stretching with hand weights, dynabands, work with exercise balls, dance movements, and an aerobic workout for a complete and overall exercise regime. Dynaerobics is taught by a certified fitness instructor/personal trainer.  Students should wear supportive sneakers and appropriate comfortable attire.
